Italeri 1312 1/72 FW 190 D-9
The idea of installing the Junkers Jumo 213A engine (until then mainly used in bombers) in the Focke-Wulf 190 airframe was an attempt to improve the aircraft's performance at high altitudes: The A and F versions actually showed this a considerable loss of speed above 7,000 metres. Armed with two 20-mm and two 13-mm cannons, the D-9 was immediately appreciated by pilots, who regarded it as an opponent on a par with the P-51 Mustang. In the supporting role of ground attack, the Dora 9 also excelled in Operation Bodenplatte, the Third Reich's "last coup" in the Ardennes. Production of the D version is estimated at 650-700 units, four of which have survived to this day.
