The Lockheed Martin-Boeing F-22 is a fifth-generation stealth-capable fighter aircraft used by the USA. The ‘Raptor’ represents an extremely innovative concept and design and has two turbofan engines with a Pratt & Whitney F119 afterburner that can generate vectored thrust by moving the exhaust nozzles. The stealth capability is achieved through an aerodynamic profile and the use of ‘high-tech’ construction materials that minimise detectability by radar. Great attention has been paid to the design of the air inlets and outlets in order to reduce the heat generated by the exhaust gases and noise emissions. The air-to-air and air-to-ground armament system is also installed in the cargo holds in the fuselage to minimise the reflections intercepted by the radar. The avionics are extremely advanced and can recognise, track and detect targets even at long ranges.
