- In order to better fulfil the logistical and transport requirements under the difficult environmental conditions on the Eastern Front
- tracked tractors were developed for the Wehrmacht, which were capable of
- numerous vehicle types and transport various loads, including ammunition and food.
- The official designation of this extremely flexible vehicle series was ‘Raupenschlepper-Ost’ (RSO).
- The RSO was mainly built by the Austrian company Steyr, which also developed an anti-tank version
- which was simple and inexpensive to produce and was armed with the reliable and feared 75 mm PaK40 cannon.
- The vehicle had essentially the same technical structure as the tractor
- but was equipped with reinforced frontal protection to allow for use in direct contact with the enemy.
