- The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was undoubtedly one of the most original aircraft in terms of design and aerodynamic layout during the Second World War.
- It was a heavy fighter with a revolutionary twin boom design
- in which the two engines were housed, while the pilot sat in a central cockpit at the front of the aircraft.
- Thanks to its two Allison V-1710 12-cylinder V-engines, each with 1425 hp, which were liquid-cooled, the P-38 reached a top speed of over 660 km/h. It was equipped with four Browning engines.
- It was armed with four Browning machine guns in 12.7 mm calibre and a Hispano M2 cannon, which ensured powerful firepower.
- Compared to the single-engine fighters of the time, it was not very manoeuvrable, but extremely robust and stable.
- Its strength lay in its long range, which proved particularly useful in the Pacific theatre and on long-range escort missions for bombers over Europe.
- Due to its characteristic shape and impressive operational capability, the P-38 was nicknamed the ‘two-tailed devil’ by enemy pilots.
