The TAMIYA BMW 320i Racing is an updated reissue of kit 24002 (BMW 320i Racing on a 1:24 scale, originally released in 1977 as a motorised model). The reissue features new decals from Cartograf, metal transfers and revised assembly instructions. BMW competed in the Manufacturers’ World Championship in 1976 with the 3.0 CSL. Although Porsche won the title in both Division 3 (for cars with an engine capacity of over 3,000 cm³) and Division 2 (for cars with an engine capacity between 2,000 cm³ and 3,000 cm³), BMW was not discouraged and returned in 1977 with the 320i Racing to mount another challenge. The car was based on the two-door 320i saloon introduced in 1975 and was tuned to deliver 298 PS from a 2.0-litre inline-four engine featuring 16-valve technology. The aerodynamics of the bodywork were tested and optimised in the Italian Pininfarina wind tunnel; the car was also fitted with a distinctive front spoiler and a rear wing. The 320i Racing made its debut at the 1977 season opener, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and continued its thrilling duel with the Porsche 935 in the 2-litre class.
